Why do scorpions have a stinger that they can sting with? Christina of Summertown, TN
Dear Christina,
The scorpion's stinger is a very important to its survival. The scorpion crushes smaller prey, like insects and spiders, with its large, front claws. It uses its curved stinger at the end of its arched tail to paralyze and kill larger prey, like lizards and snakes.
Much like that of a wasp, most scorpion stings cause pain and swelling in humans. But some kinds of scorpions that live in Africa, India, Mexico, and Arizona can kill a person quickly, so it's best to stay away from them.
Remember, God created the scorpion for a purpose. Since it eats insects, spiders, lizards, and other creatures, the scorpion helps maintain a balance in nature.
