Why did God make some snakes and spiders poisonous? — James of Garland, TX

Dear James,

Although the Bible doesn't tell us why some spiders and snakes are poisonous, it is helpful to remember how these creatures use their poison. Most of the time they use their venom to drug their prey. This is important because spiders often catch insects that are bigger than themselves. Venom helps spiders control their victims so they can't get away. Snakes don't have arms or legs with which to hold their prey, so the poisonous ones use their venom like a drug to keep their prey from fighting and getting away.

It is very rare for people to be bitten by poisonous snakes and spiders. Usually, if we respect and avoid them, we need not worry about their poison. Also, venomous bites are rarely deadly, especially if treated properly by a doctor.
