When Jesus was born, God took on human form (John 1:1-3,14). This means that Jesus was both fully God and fully human. As a human, Jesus grew up from a baby to an adult, just like we do today.

Not only did He grow up physically, Jesus also grew in "wisdom" (Luke 2:52). This means that as a human, Jesus learned about His Father's will for His life, including His death on the cross. And, though He did not want to suffer, Jesus completely obeyed His Father's will and died on the cross (Matthew 26:39,42; Philippians 2:5-9; Hebrews 5:8-9). So, Jesus is the perfect human example of obedience, and because of Him, we can be forgiven of our sins.
