Were there cave men before Christ? — Candace, Charlestown, IN

Dear Candace,

There is evidence that people did live in and around caves before Christ. Many scientists think that those who lived in these caves were less than human, and looked a little like apes. There are two problems with this idea. First, living in caves does not make one less human. The Bible records that David and others lived for some time in a cave (1 Samuel 22:1-2). Even today in certain places in Turkey and France, people continue to live in caves. And, these people certainly are not ape-like creatures.

Second, the Bible teaches that Adam and Eve were fully human when God created them. Humans did not evolve from ape-like creatures. So, the only "cave men" who lived before Christ were human beings who, for some reason, lived in caves.
